Flux

In media art practices, art exists as a form of transport. They carry thoughts, desires, intents, and questions. Throughout the process of creation, an artist resides in the flow of transportation.

Flux is a current of continuous change in transportation. In the state of flux, artists are unsettled, overwhelmed with discovered possibilities and struggles. Confronted with clots, there comes a list of alternatives and instantaneous adaptations. They fail to slow down the gush of thoughts from inside of their minds, the strong urge to evolve, the continuous steps of transcendence.

Only with the force of flux will the dialogues of souls and minds proceed.

Flux 是指一股無間斷地改變的湧流,在這狀態之下,藝術家帶著各種已發掘的可能性與掙扎,一切被未知之數包圍著,未能決定確切的目的地。面對牽掣的凝塊,他們瞬間構思出不計其數的門徑適應調和。他們無法減退湧現的思潮和意念,及那些激盪的衍變和源源的超越。

經過衝擊、融合和去蕪,這股湧流為藝術家探索到逆行、停頓、奔脫、順應的可能性,引發更動盪密集的思緒,在急流中注入另一股嶄新的浪潮,延續下去。

Flux is good. Otherwise stasis. Art loves flux. Art is flux, in flux, fluctuating to the hidden beat of times all-ways changing, anticipating if not reformulating the unexpected turn of events, which releases a flurry of activity, and some controversy, and the vitality of the newly discovered world, a cornucopia again of creative possibilities. Boundaries taken down (as in BAS). Art in flux, being in flux, learning in flux. The thrilling paradox of being able to fix a point in flux time, build an exhibition of works in testament to what is fleeting, so we can savor the moment when the past is leaving through the back door and the present is opening the front door to welcome the future. Or maybe our present is just listening to the knocking, and asking ‘who’s there?”. As we peruse each of the works in this exhibition they are showing us ‘who’s there’: the revelers to come.

Artistic production today increasingly relies on computational and scientific technologies. They extend our capacities for action and make us feel more powerful and skillful. But their users are also becoming increasingly more stupid. It is easy, for instance, to use photoshop to emboss an image. It only takes one click of the mouse. But how does the software actually execute this operation? Does a photoshop user really know what it means to emboss an image? Many technologies are designed to conceal their internal mechanisms. We artists feel that we know how to use them, but our knowledge is shallow. Enamored of the impressive audiovisual results achievable with those tools, we lose sight of the processes that actually produce those results.


The supposedly competent and creative user in fact becomes a function of the technical apparatus.


A similar situation pervades our contemporary culture. We are everywhere compelled to use or rely on scientific and computational technologies without knowing their internal operation. We are constantly invited to “participate” in social activities, as consumers, game players, film viewers, industrial workers, democratic voters, etc., but there can be no effective participation without genuine understanding. All areas of our lives, including not only art and design but also food, health, policy, and economics, are affected by scientific and technical systems so overwhelmingly complex that most of us simply give up trying to understand them, and accept instead a fixed position in a predetermined social structure.


The supposedly autonomous and rational citizen in fact becomes a function of the social apparatus.


Progress in the arts today requires that we artists actively work to change this situation. Only through an interdisciplinary approach can the artist fulfill the ideal of participation in an advanced technological and scientific culture. This pathway demands the effort to understand science from the inside, exploring its creative possibilities in an experimental and research-oriented spirit. The artist’s encounter with science often generates fruitful and original ideas. Computational and scientific technologies are not only tools ready for artists to use. They are ways of thinking. And they can suggest new ways of thinking—unprecedented artistic concepts, materials, technologies, and methods that exceed anything that we artists would have otherwise imagined.


Moving across distinct academic disciplines is essentially risky, since it takes the artist out of her comfort zone. We have been brainwashed since childhood to believe that the arts have nothing whatsoever to do with any of the sciences, and we often find it intimidating to build bridges across this seemingly impassable divide. The potential rewards, however, are well worth the risk. They include the thrill of actively participating in the construction of an advanced artistic culture that leaves outworn norms behind and embraces collaborative dialogue.


The situation of the arts today demands interdisciplinarity.


With this demand in mind, the School of Creative has developed a groundbreaking Bachelor’s degree of Art and Science (BAS) in cooperation with other academic units of the City University of Hong Kong, including Biology and Chemistry, Applied Physics, and Mathematics. The first cohort of BAS students is now graduating. We are only beginning this pioneering journey. Its destination is not fixed in advance. We, the faculty and the students, will shape the final goal in the process of moving towards it. In an art school, there can be no greater satisfaction.

catches light as it falls.


Flux becomes lux:
the Latin word flux or flow
contains lux or light.


Around the 6th century BCE, Laozi (老子) in China and Heraclitus (Ἡράκλειτος) in Greece both thought about flux. Laozi developed the idea of Wu wei (無爲), effortless flow. Heraclitus developed the idea of unity of opposites: changeless change.


Rivers remain the same even as they change. As do those who pass in and out of them, the generations that flow on their surfaces, effortlessly changing yet all the same. Born to breath, fall in love, age and eventually die. The interface is redesigned, even as core principles remain.


3 years ago I arrived in Hong Kong to teach (in my first job as a professor) a set of young students (in their first class at a university) who are now graduating. In this era of turbulent shifting digital media and networks of informational flow, the boundary between teacher and student is in flux. Occasionally, as in this exhibit, it is the students whose energy and curiosity teaches. This exhibit is their message for us; a message that is itself in flux
