The theme of this year’s graduation show is unfold. It is a term that resonates across the
spaces and multiplicities of personal identity, media forms, and media practice. Used
transitively unfold means to unwrap, and herein is announced the work of a new generation of
new media practitioners. More than that, unfold implies to reveal, to expose something
hitherto unseen and obscured, which emerges often tentatively or slowly from a state of
occlusion: these are works expressing new ways of seeing and understanding self and world.
Finally, to unfold suggests the stretching out and expansion or something crumpled and
closed in on itself and these works enlarge our perception and enact an expanded sense of
the possibilities of moving image and sound representation and expression. Intransitive use
adds further connotations. Many of these works of screen art and media installation are like
flowers or foliage that display their fascination and beauty, and like a story or as a
story, they develop and evolve before our eyes and ears. Then, perhaps in the most important
sense of all, in their unfolding the works in this show open themselves to our understanding
as spectators and listeners so that what becomes known to us in them and through them are
new ways of conceiving and inhabiting self, society, and world. Welcome to SCM Annual 2017!
