SCM ANNUAL 2018
Clusters of Instances

Clusters of Instances , as the theme of this year’s Annual Show, refers to the process of art not as an immediate one but for most clusters of instances from fragmented moments. These fragmented inspirations maybe seemingly slight and irrelevant yet, are not insignificant. They are accumulated to blaze the formation of concepts and ideas of the artist, which are eventually manifested into a tangled process of experimentations and development across every iteration of the piece. At each point, the scattered intangible process is transformed into a perceptible form that builds a possible connection with people. It is proof of the artist’s existence that leaves a personal mark in the hearts left on anyone that the work resonates with.

Clusters of Instances

Welcome to the Annual Show 2018 of School of Creative Media Undergraduates that features more than 70 works of film, photography, animation, interactive media and installations of our graduating students. The title of this year’s show, Clusters of Instances, recognizes the fragile, contingent, nature of creative imagination and realization, as well as, perhaps, reflecting a sense of in-between-ness and uncertainty in a social world that is poised between a disappearing past and uncertain future. While excellent examples of orthodox story-telling are on display in this show, it also reveals to us how audio-visual media, once they are liberated from traditional narrative form, are highly attuned to the fleeting, the ephemeral, and the fragmentary. The camera registers the ephemeral nature of things and their becoming: change, movement and passing. It can show us a point of view, a fleeting glimpse, a glance, a close-up examination, a panoramic gaze, an occluded or hidden view. It can also suggest the world of the inner, of thought, of dream, which we readily conceive as and in the image. Animated form too is plastic, subject to infinite manipulation and self-transformation, poised between representation and abstraction, and especially attuned to the logic of the inner and the subjective gaze. In this way the forms of orthodox story- telling are broken down into what we can call “micro narratives.” These are fragments of stories, partially developed analysis, suggestive emotions, brief statements of a theme, an identity, of conflicts, of a feeling, of a point of view. Clusters of Instances. Many congratulations to all the graduating students who are participating in this show!

這就是 Clusters of Instances 。

The Making of

Preparing this exhibition gave rise to more questions than answers. Many of these questions had to do with the sheer diversity of work. How could we draw a conclusion or assign a single theme for works made in such diverse media and with such diverse intentions? How could we devise an encompassing theme for the entire Annual Show, in a way that would be both coherent and representative? If the works do not share one common theme or medium, what (if anything) do they have in common?

Working together as a team, we debated many questions. We focused particularly on a common experience shared by all artists - the process experienced with the formation and emergence of the work. We took this process as one that involved the continuous creation and deconstruction of ideas through the absorption, arrangement, and questioning of materials drawn from our daily environments. A key idea behind this show is to allow some aspects of the creative process to make itself manifest in the exhibition.

Categorization

Thinking about these questions led to the question of categorization. The idea of categorizing the works rather than the media came about since we felt the need to question established media boundaries. However, what is involved in categorizing? Should we use keywords? How do we select and define those keywords? Do we ask the artist? Do we attempt to find broadly applicable keywords by ourselves? Is there really a need to categorize the works?

Over the years, School of Creative Media has been increasingly involved in the application of machine learning technology in art. An unsupervised learning approach involves clustering, which automatically distributes objects in a given set into groups. Dr. Hector Rodriguez, the advisor to the show, suggested using machine learning to cluster the works. The committee then listed around 120 words and asked each artist to pick five words. We thought we would cluster the works into distinct groups based on similar keywords.

Visual

We chose to create a happening for the creation of the key visual. A group of our students spent time together trying something out with the equipment and various random objects at the site without a very clear aim. The documentation of the process became the raw materials for our key visual.

We have also gathered some words or pictures related to the students’ process of making their own work, hopefully this could provide a glimpse of fragmented moments that forms the artworks.
