Welcome to the Annual Show 2018 of School of Creative Media Undergraduates that features more than 70 works of film, photography, animation, interactive media and installations of our graduating students. The title of this year’s show, Clusters of Instances, recognizes the fragile, contingent, nature of creative imagination and realization, as well as, perhaps, reflecting a sense of in-between-ness and uncertainty in a social world that is poised between a disappearing past and uncertain future. While excellent examples of orthodox story-telling are on display in this show, it also reveals to us how audio-visual media, once they are liberated from traditional narrative form, are highly attuned to the fleeting, the ephemeral, and the fragmentary. The camera registers the ephemeral nature of things and their becoming: change, movement and passing. It can show us a point of view, a fleeting glimpse, a glance, a close-up examination, a panoramic gaze, an occluded or hidden view. It can also suggest the world of the inner, of thought, of dream, which we readily conceive as and in the image. Animated form too is plastic, subject to infinite manipulation and self-transformation, poised between representation and abstraction, and especially attuned to the logic of the inner and the subjective gaze. In this way the forms of orthodox story- telling are broken down into what we can call “micro narratives.” These are fragments of stories, partially developed analysis, suggestive emotions, brief statements of a theme, an identity, of conflicts, of a feeling, of a point of view. 歡迎大家蒞臨香港城市大學創意媒體學院年度展，欣賞逾七十件畢業學生以影像、攝影、動畫、互動媒體和裝置等形式創作的作品。這次展覽的主題《Clusters of Instances》(意指簇合成群的各種事物)，點明了創意的想像和創意的實現兩者既脆弱又偶然的本質，同時或許也反映一種社會世界裡事物無法絕對歸類的模糊感和不確定性一一在這個社會世界本身也正處於「過去不斷消逝」而「未來尚未確定」的狀況下。這展覽既展出優秀的傳統敘事式作品，同時也通過其他形式的作品，展示視聽媒介在脱離傳統敘事方式後，能如何將一些轉瞬即逝而零星的東西充分呈現出來。鏡頭通过捕捉事物的變化、動作和消逝，記錄事物生成短暫而多變的本質。我們可以從中看到很多景像，例如某種視角、短暫的一瞥、近距離的觀察、全景的視野、隱蔽罕見的風景，又同時可透過這些影像看到一個充盈著思想和夢的內在世界。動畫形式也有可塑性，既可以任由操作，也可無限地自行轉化，並同時介乎於具象和抽象之間，尤其切合學術研究中常談到的內在和主觀凝視的邏輯。通過這些方式，傳統的敘事形式被分割成我們所認知的「微敘事」。由此而來的是一些故事的片段、尚在發展的分析、隱喻的情感，以及一些與某個主題、身份、衝突、感受或觀點有關的簡要陳述。這就是Clusters of Instances。恭喜所有參與這次展覽的畢業同學!
